Clogged Drain: When a Handyman Can Fix It and When to Call a Plumber
How to tell a simple sink, tub or shower clog from a main sewer line problem, and what each costs to fix in Martinez and Contra Costa County.
“Clogged drain near me” is one of the most searched home problems there is, and the right person to call depends on one question: is it one drain, or the whole house?
One Drain Is Slow or Stopped
A single sink, tub or shower that drains slowly is almost always a local clog: hair and soap scum in a shower or tub, grease and food in a kitchen sink, toothpaste and hair in a bathroom sink. These are handyman jobs. Typical cost for clearing one fixture by hand with a plunger, snake or by cleaning the P-trap is about $100–$200.
Clues that point to a local clog:
- Only one fixture is affected
- Water drains slowly rather than not at all
- The problem started gradually
- Pulling the stopper or cleaning the trap shows a lot of buildup
Several Drains Are Backed Up
If the washing machine drains and water comes up in the shower, if two or three fixtures gurgle at once, or if a toilet bubbles when you run water elsewhere, the clog is in the main line. That’s a licensed plumber’s job, and cable machines, hydro-jetting and camera inspection are the tools for it. I don’t run cable machines on sewer lines.
When a “Simple” Clog Keeps Coming Back
A clog that returns within days or weeks is usually further down the line than a hand snake reaches. Tree roots and old clay or cast iron pipe are common in older Contra Costa neighborhoods. Continuing to clear the same clog without finding the cause costs more over time.
What I’d Avoid
- Chemical drain cleaners. They can damage pipes, harm skin and eyes, and make later repair work more hazardous.
- Pouring grease down the drain. It cools and sticks further down.
- Running the disposal harder. Not a fix for a clogged drain line.
What It Costs
- Single sink, tub or shower clog: about $100–$200
- P-trap cleaning or replacement: about $75–$150
- Main line clearing, camera inspection, hydro-jetting: plumber pricing, and usually higher
Keep Drains Clear
A mesh strainer in tubs and showers catches most hair. Wipe grease out of pans before washing, and flush the kitchen drain with hot water after dishes.
