Door Weatherstripping: Types, Cost and When to Replace It in the Bay Area
How to tell when door weatherstripping has failed, which types to use, and what replacement costs in Martinez and Contra Costa County.
“Weatherstripping door” is searched tens of thousands of times a month, and most of it comes down to one question: why is there light, a draft or a bug getting under my door?
Signs Weatherstripping Has Failed
- You can see daylight around the closed door
- You feel a draft along the edges
- The strip is cracked, flattened, torn or missing
- The door rattles in the frame
- You find insects or leaves inside near the door
- The door sweep at the bottom is worn through
Types of Weatherstripping
- Compression (foam or rubber): presses against the door when closed. Inexpensive and common for the sides and top.
- Kerf-in or bulb seals: pressed into a groove in the door jamb. Common on newer doors and they last longer.
- Door sweep or shoe: screwed to the bottom of the door to close the gap at the floor.
- Threshold seal: replaces or adjusts the sill at the bottom.
- Magnetic seals: used on steel doors.
What Replacement Costs
- Weatherstripping replacement: about $75–$150 per door (matching the range in the handyman cost guide)
- Door sweep replacement: about $50–$100
- Threshold adjustment or replacement: about $100–$250
- Sliding door weatherstripping: quoted by the door, since parts vary
Why It Matters
Gaps around exterior doors waste heating and cooling, let in noise, dust and bugs, and can let water into the frame in winter rain. Sealing them is among the cheapest comfort improvements in a house.
When the Door Is the Problem
If the weatherstripping is new but the gap remains, the door may be warped, the hinges loose, or the frame out of square. Adjusting hinges and strike plates sometimes closes the gap. See the door repair service for that.
Fall Is a Good Time
Replacing weatherstripping before winter rain and cold keeps the house drier and warmer, and it pairs well with a caulking and weatherproofing visit.
