Garbage Disposal Replacement Cost in Martinez & Contra Costa County

What it costs to replace a garbage disposal in Martinez and the East Bay: labor, the unit itself, and when the job needs a plumber or electrician.

A garbage disposal usually dies at the worst time: a jam that won’t clear, a hum with no spin, or a leak under the sink. Replacing one is a contained job when the new unit goes where the old one was. Here’s what that costs around Martinez and the East Bay, and where the job stops being a handyman job.

These are general ranges, not a quote. The disposal itself is a separate cost.

Typical Prices

  • Labor to swap a disposal for a similar one (existing connections): about $125–$250
  • The disposal unit: commonly from around $100 for a basic 1/3 hp model up to a few hundred dollars for a larger, quieter unit
  • Parts and small extras (mounting kit, drain gasket, a new plumber’s putty seal, a cord): usually $15–$50
  • Hauling away the old unit: often included, but confirm when you book

So a typical all-in cost for a like-for-like swap lands in the low-to-mid hundreds, depending mostly on which disposal you choose.

What Changes the Price

Unit size and type. More horsepower and sound insulation cost more and weigh more. A bigger unit may not fit a cramped sink base, so measure the space first.

Plug-in or hardwired. Many disposals plug into an outlet under the sink. Some are wired directly into the home. A like-for-like swap keeps whatever connection is already there.

Dishwasher connection. If the dishwasher drains through the disposal, that line has to be reattached and the knockout plug removed on the new unit. It’s routine, but it adds a step.

Condition of the drain. An old, corroded or leaking P-trap or drain line under the sink is usually worth replacing while the area is open. That adds a part and a little time.

Leaks and water damage. If the cabinet floor is soft or rotted, that repair is separate from the disposal.

What’s Handyman Work and What Isn’t

I replace a disposal with a comparable one using the existing plumbing and electrical connections. I’ll refer you to a licensed plumber or electrician if the job needs:

  • A new outlet, new circuit or new wiring for the disposal
  • Re-routing or replacing drain lines beyond the P-trap area
  • Any work inside walls or on the main supply
  • A permit

If a disposal swap uncovers a bigger plumbing problem, I’ll tell you before going further.

Is It Worth Replacing?

A jam or a tripped reset button is sometimes fixable without replacing the unit. If it hums but doesn’t spin, a hex key in the bottom socket often frees it. If the unit is leaking from the body (not just a loose seal), or is more than about 10 years old and failing, replacement is usually the better call.
