Ceiling Fan Installation Cost in Martinez & Contra Costa County
What it costs to have a ceiling fan installed in Martinez, Concord, Walnut Creek and the East Bay, and when you need an electrician instead of a handyman.
Ceiling fan installation is one of the most searched home jobs, and the prices you find online mix together two very different jobs: swapping a fan onto a ceiling box that’s already there, and running new wiring where there’s nothing. This guide covers the first one, which is handyman work, and tells you where the second one starts.
These are general labor ranges for Martinez and nearby East Bay towns, not a quote. The fan itself is extra.
Typical Labor Prices
- Replace an existing ceiling fan with a new one (same box): about $125–$225
- Replace a light fixture with a ceiling fan (fan-rated box already in place): about $150–$275
- Fan in a vaulted or very high ceiling: add $50–$150 for ladder and safety setup
- Assembling a fan with a light kit or remote receiver: often included, but quote it up front
The fan is a separate purchase. Basic fans run from under $100 to several hundred dollars for larger or designer models, and you can buy it yourself or I can pick one up with you. If you’re buying one, check that it matches the room size and, for ceilings under about 8 feet, that it’s a low-profile (“hugger”) model.
What Decides the Price
The ceiling box. This is the big one. A box that’s only rated for a light fixture can’t safely hold a spinning fan. A fan-rated box is what makes this a simple swap. If yours isn’t fan-rated, the box has to be replaced or braced, which changes the job.
Ceiling height and shape. An 8-foot flat ceiling is quick. A great room with a vaulted ceiling takes more setup, taller ladders and more time.
Existing wiring and switches. A fan with a light often wants separate control of the fan and light. If the wall has a single switch, a remote control kit is the easy fix. Adding a second switch is electrician work.
Fan size and weight. Heavier fans and large-blade models take longer to hang and balance.
Number of fans. Doing several in one visit costs less per fan than separate trips.
What’s Handyman Work and What Isn’t
I swap fixtures and fans at existing, properly rated ceiling boxes. In California, the licensed trade starts when the job needs:
- A new electrical box where there isn’t one
- A new circuit or any work inside the electrical panel
- New wiring runs or a new switch location
- A permit
Those go to a licensed electrician, and they usually cost more than a fan swap. If I open the ceiling and find a box that isn’t rated for a fan, or wiring I’m not comfortable with, I’ll stop and tell you rather than finish it anyway.
