When to Clean Gutters in the Bay Area: A Fall and Spring Schedule
The best time to clean gutters in Martinez and the East Bay is late October through November, with a second pass in spring if you have big trees.
The Bay Area doesn’t get a gutter-clogging season the way the East Coast does, but our rain arrives all at once. A dry summer and fall, then a run of winter storms, means everything that fell since spring is sitting in your gutters when the first big rain hits. Timing the cleaning is most of the job.
The Short Answer
- Fall cleaning: late October through November, after most leaves have dropped and before the heavy storms settle in.
- Spring cleaning: March or April if you live under oak, pine, maple or liquidambar trees, to clear seed pods, flowers and needles.
If you only do one, do the fall one.
Why Late October to November
Cleaning too early means you do it twice, because trees like liquidambar and many maples are still dropping into November. Cleaning after the storms start means working on wet, slippery ladders and wet debris, and the first downpour will already have found the clog.
Signs Your Gutters Need Attention Now
- Water spilling over the edge during rain, especially in one spot
- Dark streaks or staining on the fascia or siding below the gutter
- Plants or moss growing out of the gutter
- Gutters pulling away from the house or sagging
- Downspouts that run dry during a storm or back up at the base
How Often
For most Contra Costa homes it’s once or twice a year. Homes with few trees can often go a full year. Homes tucked under mature oaks, in neighborhoods like Alhambra Valley or the hills around Lafayette and Danville, tend to need the second spring pass.
What a Handyman Can and Can’t Do
Cleaning, downspout flushing, tightening brackets, resealing small seams and adding downspout extensions are all handyman work. Replacing sections, installing seamless gutters, or anything on the roof itself belongs with a licensed gutter or roofing contractor. I’ll say so up front if your gutters are past a cleaning.
