Deck Repair and Staining Cost in Martinez & Contra Costa County

What deck repair, board replacement and staining cost in Martinez and the East Bay, and how to know when a deck is a safety problem.

Decks in the East Bay take sun in the summer and soaking rain in the winter, and both break down wood. A little maintenance keeps a deck safe for years. Here’s what common deck jobs cost at a handyman scale.

These are general ranges, not a quote. Materials and stain are extra.

Typical Prices

  • Replace a few deck boards: about $150–$350
  • Tighten stair treads, railings and loose fasteners: about $100–$250
  • Replace a stair tread: about $100–$200
  • Wash a deck before staining: about $100–$300
  • Stain or seal a small deck: about $300–$600
  • Repair a loose or wobbly railing: about $100–$250

Stain or seal prices depend heavily on deck size and the amount of sanding needed. A larger deck can pass California’s $1,000 limit, and I’ll tell you if yours does.

Staining: When and How

  • Wash first and let the wood dry fully, often 24 to 48 hours.
  • Pick a stain for the wood type and sun exposure.
  • Avoid staining in direct midday sun or right before rain.
  • Expect to re-stain every two to three years, depending on exposure.

Safety Problems vs. Cosmetic Ones

Faded color and a few cracked boards are cosmetic. A deck that moves when you walk, railings that give, ledger boards pulling from the house, or rotted joists and posts are safety problems. Structural repairs need a licensed contractor, and sometimes a permit.

What Changes the Price

Deck size and height. A ground-level deck is simple. A raised deck with stairs takes longer.

Board type. Pressure-treated, redwood and composite boards all differ in cost and in how they’re replaced.

Condition. Old, cupped boards sometimes can’t just be flipped, and neighboring boards may be weak.

Prep. Sanding, washing and filling take more time than staining itself.

Pair It With Fence Care

If your fence needs staining too, doing both in one visit saves setup time. See the fence repair cost guide and the pressure washing guide.
