Studs, anchors and what the wall can hold

Hollow-wall anchors work for light items. Anything with weight, such as shelves of books, large mirrors and TVs, belongs in studs. A stud finder helps, but I confirm with a small test hole in a spot the hardware will cover.

Getting it level and in the right spot

I mark locations before drilling and check against the room, not just the wall. A shelf perfectly level but too close to a window or door looks off, and a curtain rod mounted at the right height makes a ceiling look taller.
